Tyrer House

history

"

Mr F A Tyrer was first appointed as Principal of Stratford Primary School in 1892. By 1897 he had written to the Taranaki Education Board regarding secondary education in Stratford . On 23 August 1897 the Minister of Education approved the establishment of the Stratford District High School . By the end of 1897 Mr Tyrer was Principal of the Stratford District High School (SDHS) and had six pupils on the roll. He undertook the construction of the previous school on Cloten Road, where it became a Technical High School. He was a guiding force in the movement of the school to the current location in Swansea Road, but he resigned with effect from 31 January 1922, partly due to differences of opinion with the Taranaki Education Board and ill health. His final comment on himself was "I am pleased to close my career with such a report on my life's work.
